A Quiet Place movie is a creature feature starring John Krasinski as Lee Abbot, his wife Emily Blunt as Evelyn. Emily and John have two kids and are also married in real life. In the movie they have three kids. Below is my “A Quiet Place” movie review:
The movie is about couple and their kids trying to survive a world that is taken over by creatures that hunt by sound. The couple goes about their daily life without making any noise. Any loud noise will attract unwanted attention to themselves. Things like closing of doors and the family’s paths are covered in sand to minimize their noise levels.
In order to prepare for the movie, the cast learned American Sign Language (ASL) from a deaf mentor named Douglas Ridloff. The characters were portrayed as knowing the sign language for a long period of time. This meant the filmmakers wanted the language to be smooth. The father had short hand signs to show his survival mentality. The mother had more elaborate signs showing her want to experience life in a greater sense than just survival. Initially it was planned to not use subtitles for the sign language. However, due to one crucial scene in the movie that would have been difficult to understand without it, the idea was scrapped. The movie has only about 25 lines of dialogue.
Millicent Simmonds (Regan) plays the daughter in the movie. She has been deaf in real life since infancy. Krasinski, who directed the movie and wrote the screenplay, wanted to hire a real deaf person. He wanted to learn from her and see how she sees the world seeing she has been deaf for a long time.
The Quiet Place movie is a lot of fun to watch – this review doesn’t do it justice. It is original and very well done. Everything from cinematography to music to editing was perfect. Krasinski had three directorial movies under his belt so he was well qualified for the role. He loved the idea of protecting his children in a dangerous environment. With a small push from his wife, he accepted the role. Fans loved their on screen chemistry. However, John has gone on the record to say he loves working with his wife but he wouldn’t direct a movie with her in it. This was due to his fear of messing it up. Initially Emily Blunt wanted her friend to play the wife, but she also fell in love with the script.
The movie has a great cast that play off each other well. While it is a creature feature, it feels more like a family survival movie. It focuses a lot on the family and the emotions they go through while trying to survive a world full of monsters. This was my 2nd review. Want to see my 1st? Click here!
