Beast (2022) is a horror movie directed by Baltasar Kormákur. It deals with a family that gets stuck in a car while a blood thirsty lion circles them. Below is my Beast (2022) movie review

 Beast (2022) movie poster

At the beginning, it starts off just like any other movie. It introduces the characters and tells us that they have lost somebody in their life. There is obviously a bunch of tension between the family members, but they try to get along anyway. Once they are given a tour, very quickly things go bad. They not only get separated but they also get into accidents and have their car break down. Unfortunately this is where the stupid starts to shine.

First there is a family drama. The members don’t get well with each other and it is constant bickering that gets old. Second, the kids are really stupid. When their dad asks them to stay in the car, they don’t. When he ventures out to rescue somebody, they make noise and call him on the walkie talkie, exposing his location. Keep in mind the lions have very keen eyesight and hearing. They are engineered to be deadly.

Thirdly, there is no way in hell you will survive much in kion’s environment. They camouflage well and they are way faster than even the fastest human. Finally, as a last point, you can’t punch a lion in the face and expect it to back away. Those animals are made to take kicks to the face from other animals and not let go. Humans hands would tickle their hardened face. We humans have no chance against them.

The main character makes a lot of dumb choices. He is an adult that should know there is no way to outsmart a lion in its own arena. He still tries and usually ends up being bad. I know food and water is scarce but one should have let others know when venturing to dangerous territory. If they did, waiting in the car would have been the safest option. The lack of preparation is so dumb.

The setting is really nice, giving us some great shots of wildlife. The cinematography is fine too as the handheld camera shaking adds to the limited suspense that is displayed. The cast is OK too but the constant back and forth was annoying. They don’t have great chemistry but it did not completely ruin the movie. What ruined the movie are the actions of these characters. Still overall worth the 90 min of mindless fun. Just don’t question it too much. Rolling eyes helps though.
