Cobweb is a 2023 horror movie directed by Samuel Bodin. It deals with a little kid that hears knocking sounds in his room that lead to a reveal of a secret that his parents kept from him. Below is my Cobweb (2023) movie review
The movie starts off rather monotonous and boring. We have a bullied kid who has a sheltered life at home. His parents are strict and really creepy. They live a sheltered life and they keep the young boy (named Peter) away from other kids. This is how he meets his teacher who plays a strong role in helping out Peter at the end. She takes interest in his life when she notices Peter drawing some creepy things (another horror cliche staple).
The movie is really short. In total it is about 90 min with credits. While the overall pacing can be slow and not very fun, the movie does pick up in the 2nd half of it. By picking up, I meant some stuff is actually happening. The parents are still creepy and they get increasingly weird. The young boy tries his best to figure out the mystery of the person in the walls, but he is also very naive. He can be manipulated very easily which is what eventually happens.
Towards the end, the movie gets very dark. Again, by dark I mean really dark so we as audiences can’t see much. When we see the actual person who was in the wall, we can’t actually get a good look at it. While CGI should be used whenever needed, this time it was used a little too much. We have creepy moments but sometimes they appear as if they are a blur. The hair was a really good touch as well as the contortionist’s movements, but the face reveal was a disappointment.
I would have liked to see more of a relationship between Peter and his parents. I want to know was this relationship always weird and strained. Also, considering the filmmaker’s reliance on CGI, couldn’t they save some money for that one scene of face reveal and make it a practical effect? There are also things left unexplored such as the girl that died on Halloween.
With all that in mind, this movie was decent. It had some gore, good acting, great cinematography and never really drags on too much. There are some creepy scenes, some really dark ones, and some choppy ones that were ruined by shoddy CGI. The ending is also OK, but it was very cliche. Speaking of cliches, this movie is filled to the brim with them. From a young bullied boy, to creepy parents, to the final “twist” reveal, none of this is original. The movie is also filled with jumpscares which have become staple of mediocre at best horror movies.
Should you watch it? I would still say you should. It is not boring (besides the beginning), but it could have been much better. Nothing unique about it but it has some good scares and the acting was great, even from the kid.
