Downrange is a 2017 horror survival movie directed by Ryuhei Kitamura. It deals with a group of people who get into an accident on a remote road with a sniper hiding around and picking them off one at a time. Below is my short Downrange (2017) movie review

At the beginning of the movie we meet a group of strangers carpooling together. We don’t know much about them and there is a good amount of awkward humor going around. There is some sexual tension among the group members but nothing too strong. This is a movie that does not waste time and throws us into the action right away. As soon as the movie starts the group’s car flips over and they are separated into groups as they find out a sniper is picking them one by one.

Once we find out about the sniper, the movie takes a more slow down pace. The characters try their best to understand the situation and plan their next move. Some of these moves are stupid, but that is explainable considering the situation. This is where we find out more about the characters but there is nothing of substance being revealed. There are also some things such as one character wanting to yell and walk out of the protection of the car because his loved one is killed is really stupid. Trauma and anger can be blinding but this action was really dumb.

Anyway, this movie can be very violent and bloody. It comes from a director who directed Midnight Meat Train (2008) (very bloody but the blood is over the top) and Versus (2000). The director is very much known for violent movies and this movie is no exception. Most of the violence is CGI while some is practical. Most of it had to do with headshots which created huge blood spatters. It is not as good as some of the higher budget Hollywood movies, but it is serviceable for such a low budget movie.

Overall this is a decent movie with some great violence for horror fans. Majority of the movie takes place in the day time so the violence is very much visible. This is unique for a horror movie which usually takes place at night. The ending might make or break the movie for you. By that point you will either be happy all of these one dimensional characters are dead or you will be disappointed with how it all wraps up. The characters are also not unique or likable so I assume you will more lead towards the first choice. Also, the cops scene was really jarring and out of place for me. They did not act like actual policemen.

Thanks for reading my Downrange (2017) movie review
