Get Away (2024) is a horror comedy directed by Steffen Haars. It deals with an English family that goes on vacation that goes wrong very fast. Below is my Get Away (2024) movie review

When the family gets to the island, everybody is hostile towards them. The inhabitants don’t say much, don’t interact, and are overall standoffish. They keep telling the family that they don’t belong there and should go back to their country. They want to celebrate their holiday and don’t want foreigners there. This is how half of the movie is presented. On top of this there are few creepy scenes that are there to be red herrings and throw us off course.
Everything up to this point is shown to say that locals don’t want any foreigners on their land. They talk amongst each other and genuinely don’t appear friendly. As the movie goes on we get a sense that the locals are celebrating a big holiday that cannot go wrong. We see them being secretive and traditional. The way of their ancestors is the way of their current life. This explains why foreigners are not very welcome.

At this point the movie suddenly becomes something completely different. It comes out of nowhere and will either make the movie 100% better for you or ruin it completely. Unfortunately for me it was the latter. I did not expect it and I was not prepared for it. As far as I could tell (and I am not rewatching it) there were no clues that this was going to happen. The blood and carnage that occurs from this point on was surreal. You can say I am not a fan of movies that do this 180 degree turn and go insane. The movie was built up as a comedy, maybe even dark comedy, and eventually became very gory and gratuitous.
The characters, besides the locals, are very enjoyable. The kids are typical kids on their phones while the parents joke around a lot. At one point the parents were sitting on a log and the woman offered her husband a blow job. It came out of nowhere but it shows their weird personalities. The daughter at one point also says she like fat c*cks. It’s a weird little raunchy comedy that took a turn into a very dark direction. It’s not bad, but it was too sudden for me.
Try not to look too deep into this movie. If you do, you will find a lot of flaws in it. Pay close attention to how some people can be injured and basically walk it off. Or how some people are useless in defending themselves. Movie has a lot of failed comedy moments and I don’t particularly call it horror. It is over the top and very goofy at times. It comes off as a movie that the director had in mind but could not decide what to make so he made a mix of everything. The problem with that is it ends up being all over the place.
