Meg 2: The Trench is a 2023 science fiction/action movie directed by Ben Wheatley. It deals with a bunch of scientists who find a deep ocean mining company as well as blood thirsty megalodons. Below is my Meg 2: The Trench (2023) movie review
This movie is filled with people who have very wooden dialogue, bloodless kills, and actors who spend 80% in a studio pretending to be on a deep sea vessel. A lot of the dialogue is filled with English while ⅓ of it is in Chinese. Because China is a huge part of the overall movie market, half of the main characters in this movie are Asian. Not that it matters, but the constant back and forth in Chinese and then in English gets annoying.
There are numerous locations where this movie was filmed. However, the submersibles, the ocean floor, and the mining citation feel like one place. The walk on the floor of the ocean was really boring. You also got some stupid actions by characters such as wanting to go back for a character killed by giant sharks. Besides this, the characters are also boring. They keep mentioning characters from the first movie, while the 2nd part is all about them and their empty character toolbox. Nothing is memorable about them.
This movie is about 2 hrs long. One expects a good portion of the movie will be all about Megs. However, I was not prepared for how much of it will be all about wooden characters. I don’t really care about them, their struggles, their cliche betrayals one can see a mile away, etc. I also don’t care about other villains of the movie if they have cookie cutter motivations. Of course it is all about money, how did you know?
In terms of the actual action, it is OK. There is no gore due to it being PG-13. While I would be OK with this, the whole idea of megalodons is that they are prehistoric monsters who eat everything in their path. They chomp metal, boats, wood, etc. However, when it comes to people we get glimpses of people being eaten. They are swallowed, not chewed. We see no gore yet that is why most of us go to watch this type of a movie. They put new monsters in the movie but again, they are very boring. Ohhh you got a salamander looking dinosaur in your movie who eats humans? Ohhh AND a squid/octopus??? Breaking some new grounds here people.
Seriously, while I am being a bit of a dick here, the movie is not necessarily bad. However, it is too long, has boring characters, awful dialogue, and nothing new. This is a Meg that eats humans with no blood to be seen and goes after a giant squid. Screaming humans and characters who look like it is their first time reading the script really adds to this boring mess of a movie. If you got 2hrs to waste and feel like seeing some sharks swimming around while humans sneak around them, this should be a great movie for you.
BTW, even Jason Statham (Jones in the movie) was disappointed with lack of blood in this movie.
