Sisu (2022) is an action/war movie directed by Jalmari Helander. Below is my Sisu (2022) movie review

Sisu (2022) movie poster

IMO, this movie is awesome. While it is not really unique in its promise, it is really fun to watch nonetheless. It deals with an old man who lives alone and ends up digging up some gold. He then embarks on a journey to sell it but then encounters Nazis. What these Nazis didn’t know is that the old man is legendary in his brutality.

The man does not talk. He grunts a few times but that’s about it. However, through exposition from other characters we get to hear more about his past and his legendary bloody rampages. With that in mind, the movie does not linger too much on any scenes. Once we are introduced to the man we get to see him dig for gold, find gold, and encounter Nazis in about 30 min. The movie is about 90 min and the rest of the movie is filled with graphic violence and carnage. It is not non-stop but there is plenty of it.

Besides the old man and Nazis there are no other really important characters present on screen for the majority of the movie. There are some women but they have only a few scenes thrown in there. With that in mind, most of the movie is the old man taking down the Nazis. Whether it is shooting them, stabbing them, throwing land mines on their head and exploding them, it gets really bloody.  A lot of things in this movie will make you ask “how did he survive that?”. However, these scenes are really fun so you might be able to ignore all of that.

This is essentially a movie about a man who lost everything and is able to move on and not bother anybody. As with many movies like this, he eventually gets pulled into a life he tried to forget. You feel bad for him and his lonely life so you want him to survive against all odds. He is still very deadly and agile for his age so he knows he can go back to his old life if he is pushed hard enough. Fortunately he does get dragged back in to kill some Nazis because f*ck them.

With all said and done, this movie is fun to watch. It is very bloody and has a lot of carnage in it. We have a likable good guy who does not say much (besides a few words at the end) and a bunch of Nazis that nobody cares about. Movie never drags and cinematography is great with a good amount of wide shots of nature and its beauty. Per IMDb, “The exteriors are shot in Finnish Lapland, mainly near the villages of Nuorgam and Kaamanen”.
