Superdeep (2020) is a Russian horror movie directed by Arseny Syuhin. Movie deals with a bunch of soldiers/scientists investigating an outbreak of a disease in a deep facility in 1984. Below is my Superdeep (2020) movie review

Superdeep (2020) movie poster

The entire premise is quite interesting. The outbreak is deep beneath a frozen land where a lab is set up. Speaking of the lab, there is nothing unique about it. Most shots of it make it appear as generic as possible. This is, after all, a secret lab that does some ultra secret stuff hidden from most people. I know the budget is low, but setting is very important when establishing the mood of the film. This is especially needed in this movie as most of it is set in this deep lab.

With that out of the way, we focus on characters. None of them are especially likable or interesting. Their dialogues from what one can gather online is all over the place. Some native Russians had said the dialogue seems to be written in English but Google translated to Russian later on. The characters are also very bland where most are very forgettable. Their overall acting is very stiff. Picture a room of miserable people with scowls on their face and you will have an idea on how they are depicted in the movie.

For the majority of the movie, not much happens. Dialogue alludes to some weird fungus being around, but not much else. This leads to a lot of scenes that are either boring or don’t contribute much to the overall story. With a running time of 110 min or so, it could have been trimmed down a lot. Not everything needed to be shown and the scenes that are interesting needed to be shown more towards mid, not end of the movie. These scenes are decent and well done. However, the creature’s scenes were not shown enough and a bunch of them were shown out of focus and in the background. A bit disappointing as most of us wanted to see that the most.

The pacing of the movie is weird. A lot of awkward editing. There are also some plot holes that are best not to think about. Top that off with long lingering shots, empty dialogue, and boring characters, and you don’t get much to look forward to.
