The Boat is a 2018 movie about a solo trailer that gets trapped on a small sailboat. That’s it. I might have even ruined the movie by saying this much. Anyway, it is starring Joe Azzopardi as the sailor and directed by Winston Azzopardi. It was also written by Joe and Winston. The Boat (2018) movie review

The Boat (2018) movie poster

To be fair, Joe is not a bad actor. He doesn’t say much (maybe 20 lines at most) but his mannerisms and overall acting is good, but not great. In one of the scenes he appears to have tied his hair back and unties it immediately out of frustration – unintentionally funny. Besides him, there are no other people that he interacts with. Some are seen in the background (think of them as tourists), but none of them are important to the story. In this case, the main character is the only one who carries the story.

As for the story itself, it is really simple and nothing big of any significance happens. The best and most exciting thing that happens is him getting locked in the bathroom or a storm that puts his life in danger (as if they will kill the main, and the only, character in the movie). For a movie that’s about 90 min, it features a lot of sailing action, man trapped in a bathroom, dolphins, and a storm. That is all. None of this is suspenseful in the slightest. It is definitely not exciting. There are a couple of scenes where you think will be exciting, but end up being really lame.

On top of this, the man finds a few odd things on the boat that makes him suspect something bad happened on it, but it leads absolutely nowhere. If you think the movie will explain any seemingly supernatural sounds/events, you will be severely disappointed.

It goes on like this for the majority of the movie runtime. Has a small twist in the end but it is definitely not worth sitting through it. If random things kept happening or there were some weird visions the character was going though, it would make it more interesting. It would justify the character going insane and sweeping it under “sea madness”.

The ending itself doesn’t explain anything and is completely useless and forgettable. The only people who I would recommend this movie to are those who hate violence, like one setting/one actor stories and like some clean suspense where nobody gets hurt. I am sure there are a lot of people out there who are like this – nothing wrong with that.
