The Platform is unlike any movie I have ever seen. The premise is simple – some time in the future, criminals are roomed (two per floor) in a big building where they get to eat food that comes from the top on a platform (with people on bottom starving to death). My quick The Platform (2019) movie review is below

The Platform (2019) movie poster

There are not a lot of characters in this movie and each of them have different reasons for being there. The main character Goreng (played by Ivan Massagué), volunteered for this experience so he can read and quit smoking. He didn’t know what he is getting himself into. After his first roommate explains to him the rules of “The Hole”, he starts to realize he might have bitten off a bigger piece than he can chew. It starts to dawn on him that people in the prison tend to become worse as time goes. This especially applies if they end up on lower levels (their place changes often).

There are a lot of things going on in the movie. A lot of graphic violence, nudity (male frontal), as well as eating food in a disgusting way. There is also a scene ( a quick one) where a person shits on another person (on their face). If you are not used to these types of movies, you might be too disgusted to even care about the central story. It involves a lot of yelling, violence, and moving on the floating platform from one floor to another.

In order to enjoy the movie, you have to look at why these people are doing what they are doing and how one’s opinion of people below changes as they get designated to upper floors. It is a dog eat dog world and only the strongest survive. Even if that means reducing them down to their basic instincts and turning them into animals.

One of the things that are not too explained is the ending of the movie. It just…ends. Some people like this while others want everything to be spoon fed and explained to them. There is a certain expectation or assumption at the end that tells the audience there is hope but it is not clearly stated. It is a bit of a cliffhanger/sequel bait but there probably is a slim chance a sequel will be made. With that in mind, this movie was pretty good. With a central location and some solid acting from everybody, it really pulls a punch with all the bloody violence and heavy themes of social class and social standing that will definitely leave an impression on the viewers.

Thanks for reading my The Platform (2019) movie review
