Preator (1987) is one of my favorite movies of all time. It had great actions, good dialogue, and characters that were not annoying or over the top. The Predator (2018) is the biggest disappointment of the year. The Predator (2018) movie review. Here we go.

The Predator (2018) movie poster

Directed and co-written by Shane Black and starring Boyd Holbrook as Quinn, the whole story follows a team of ex-soldiers fighting to prevent a huge conflict with an alien race. It’s similar to the other Predator movie so the story itself overall is average. However, that is the only thing that is average in the entire movie. Everything else is beyond average.

The soldiers have some of the worst banter I have ever heard in my entire life. About 98% of the jokes (trust me, there are a lot of them) fall flat and the other 2% are unintentionally funny. There are throwbacks to the original movie but it seems so forced and shoehorned in that it appears cringey as hell. The characters are bad…really bad.

They have no good characteristics. One tells really bad jokes, one has a backstory that makes him appear to be good even though he did a bad thing, one has tourettes, which creates this misunderstanding among people who don’t know him because he says sexual things that he can’t but spew out. Olivia Munn’s character is awful. She geeks out and figures things fast, but her lines are really bad. She is there to look pretty, which I really hate. Towards the end she has some fight scenes but they are not redeemable.

The small child character (played by Jacob Tremblay) is OK, but his uniqueness to the plot is rather odd. Some critics have said that it might leave some parents upset in how his strange quirks are represented. His abilities are also weird because he can figure out things that are a little too far fetched. That’s all I’m going to say about that. However, it can be also interpreted as Black trying to infuse a new take into the Predator lore.

As for the predators themselves, they are OK. The regular size one is OK, but the movements are a bit funky. The large one is bad because it is mix of CGI and a 7 foot actor so it comes off as clunky and robotic in its movements. The action is also OK but it is ruined by bad camera work and horrible CGI blood. Also, everyone was thrown about and survived large falls that should have killed them so many times. The dogs that were introduced are HORRIBLE. They are completely useless and are there to suck up bullets.

Also, they didn’t pose a threat and the whole appearance with dreadlocks was beyond laughable. They fetch and wag their tails. The scenes that were considered action were really bad and I didn’t believe they had any kind of presence on the screen. It was filmed so badly that I didn’t believe they were there and posing any threat.  Completely useless but I’ll give credit that Black attempted to show something different. However, it’s a very small credit.
