The Last Voyage of Demeter (2023) is a horror movie directed by André Øvredal. It deals with a ship going from Bulgaria to England carrying dangerous cargo. Below is my The Voyage of the Demeter (2023) movie review
The movie starts at a port where the cargo is loaded. As usual you got some people who warn the captain that what he is carrying is evil. The captain dismisses it and goes on with the job, wanting to finish the journey and retire. The rest of the crew are a hard working man and a young boy and his dog. All of them are interesting in their own way and the acting from all is pretty good.
As they embark on the journey they start to hear weird noises coming from the hold. While they don’t pay much attention to it, it becomes obvious that something is wrong once all the animals are killed off. They all had the same bite marks on their neck which kicks off the mystery of what could have killed them. As always, people point fingers at each other, but are quickly shut down by the captain.
As for the rest of the movie, it is more of the same. People start missing and puddles of blood are found. More fingers are pointed and it eventually comes out that something is onboard and will kill them all. The kills that we see are good. While the creature effects can be a bit spotty, once the bites are administered we see a lot of blood gushing out. Not all of the kills are on screen, but we do see the aftermath of it all.
As more kills are seen, tension starts to build. People start accusing new people on the ship and we also have cliche religious guy who asks everybody to repent for their sins. This goes on for the rest of the movie. He never gets annoying but the constant argument does get annoying.
The movie does run a bit too long. Some scenes could have been shortened or completely cut as they don’t affect the overall story. The ending itself is also cliche but it does set it up for a sequel. Based on the performance of the movie in the theaters, most likely that sequel will never come. This is a shame as the movie has some good things going for it. Besides good acting all around, the atmosphere can be quite intense at times, the cinematography is great, and the kills are very brutal.
Personally I would have liked to see more of the creature. However, I also think that having him in the shadows and only being present wherever absolutely necessary makes him more menacing. With that in mind, while the movie can be long, it is also fun to see people getting picked off one by one. Ending is solid, but also cliche.
