The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020) is a horror comedy directed by Jim Cummings (plays John Marshall). He also wrote and stars in the movie. The movie deals with a easy to anger man who is suddenly met with bunch of mysterious murders. Below is my short The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020) movie review
On top of being a police officer he is also dealing with losing sleep, helping his sick father and raising a daughter. This makes him have a very short fuse that keeps getting shorter and shorter as time goes. As the mysterious murders keep piling up, more people start exploring idea of a supernatural killer. This makes John lose his sh*t. This is a big theme of the movie and it is fun to see John curse and act angry as all of his frustrations come out. In some ways it makes him more relatable to the audience.
The effects on the creature are well done. For a good portion of the movie it is not shown on screen but its presence is always felt. This also goes for the violence in the movie. A lot of it would be shown more after it happens rather than showing it on screen. While the violence is brief and mainly shown through crime scene photos, it can be very bloody/brutal. It is nowhere close to being as brutal as movies such as Dog Soldiers (2002) which also deals with werewolves. However, this doesn’t take away from the audience’s enjoyment of the movie.
Some might say the whole werewolf thing is allegory for something else. It represents John’s rage as well as his need to protect his people and his daughter from the madman on the loose. It is a bit terrifying to watch John as he has the personality where he will go nuts at any point. The encounters with other people are pretty tense as John tries to figure out what is going on. He is also trying to prove himself in some way that he can be reliable and there for those that need him.
Overall this was a solid film. The cast is fun, the writing is good, and the werewolf is done well so it doesn’t come off as cheap.
