What a lackluster ride. On the surface this movie has a promising plot – a bunch of soldiers go deep down in a bunker and discover that within the multiple levels lies evidence of gruesome experimentations. It looked promising enough and I thought it would show me something I have not seen before. Trench 11 (2017) movie review
However, that was not the case. Before the soldiers entered the bunker, the mood was set and the cinematography was great. Even the acting was decent with good performances from all of the cast members. The problems started piling up when they entered the tunnel.
The movie relied a lot on cliches and jump scares, so much so that I could pinpoint who will live and who will die based on their conversation and character traits. I was also unsure where everyone was in relation to each other. The tunnel is vast so I didn’t know how far each of these characters were from each other. You get one action scene where characters are shouting and fighting yet everybody else in the other rooms are oblivious of their noise.
The villain was bland and his last scenes were as boring as they get. This movie was rated R meaning they should have showed more gore, more torture, and more memorable bad guys. This leads me to the ending or what I consider to be the movie’s weakest part.
Without spoiling it, the ending was so bad. It is basically a villian going on about fate of the world and that’s about it. There is no payoff, no big fight, no big gruesome death. No. Nothing like that. In fact, other soldiers died in a grander fashion than the villain. That should tell you a lot about the movie itself. It was so weird to see a villain monologuing with 10 minutes left in the movie. It took me out of the movie. Thank the stars this movie is relatively short.
Overall a big letdown. If you want the movie with relatively low body count, CGI blood, and unsatisfying payoff, this movie is perfect for you. If you watched the trailer and thought it has potential, you will probably agree with me and this review after seeing the movie. Give it a go but don’t expect much.
