Velvet Buzzsaw is a 2019 American satirical supernatural horror film written and directed by Dan Gilroy and starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo. The movie is is centered around a series of art pieces that are found by an art collector that suffers grave consequences when their greed gets the best of them. My Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) movie review follows

My main complaint about this movie is the fact that everybody (besides Coco (played by Natalia Dyer) is horrible. They are rich, retentious a-holes who are overly critical of every art piece they encounter. I know artwork is all about who discovers the best new art pieces, but the fact that these people are so obnoxious and have zero redeemable qualities made me impatient on when their deaths are supposed to happen. You know it will happen, but the waiting is the biggest torture of them all. It speaks volumes when the only thing about the movie that interested me were the kill scenes. Some got really graphic and bloody.

The third act of the movie is underwhelming. The second one sets up a weird turn of events that fizzles by the end and doesn’t leave much of an impressionable reaction. Was this supposed to be horror? If so, it didn’t live up to the standards of a horror movie IMO. Besides the gore the movie becomes unmemorable because it doesn’t know where its focus is. It keeps moving from one character to another and the next character is worse than the one behind it. This leaves us zero reasons to care about them. Of course, some people will love these bitchy lifeless prototypes of pretentiousness, but I am not one of them.

I don’t think the movie was bad. It had some great camera angles and I even liked some of the banter, but it didn’t have enough sustenance to keep me awake. The cast, which I will skip in naming, is fantastic. Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo (both were in Nightcrawler, another movie by Dan Gilroy), were amazing. Very versatile and highly entertaining to watch. However, most of the other people in the general audience also praised the cast, but not much else. The movie is a drag with a lot of pointless moments between horrible characters. Maybe my focus was in the wrong place, but I just couldn’t say I enjoyed this movie. Like many others pointed out, the trailer was very intriguing, but the movie was too ambitious and turned into a hot mess.
